![]() Yi Xing Ma (Ma Yi Xing, 马艺星) Bio Ma Yi Xing was born just at the right time, in modern China. When he was studying art at Beijing's China Academy of Fine Art, the most prestigious art school, in China, in the late 1970's, the cultural revolution was ending. China was, again, reopening its doors to Western influence, and Western art was finding its way, once again, into China. Although many of the Western genres were frowned upon by the art establishment, in Beijing, at the time, Ma was moved and excited by such genres as British Absurdity, German Constructivism, and American Pop Culture art. Indeed, his graduation project, which included female nudity in a deconstructionist work, won him a failing grade (his teacher apologized to him, once Ma had achieved fame and fortune). With encouragement from the head of Guangzhou's more progressive Fine Art Academy, Guo Shao Gang, Ma continued to pursue his own style of painting, drawing on those Western genres. He also continued his love of painting women, as you can see from some of the works that we offer at Leona Craig Art Gallery. Personally, we love his art, which has ranged from realism, early in his career, to deconstructionism, later, and, these days, a fusion of Eastern watercolor and Western deconstructionism. His works command high prices, and some, in the industry, believe he is destined to achieve a stature equal to Xiao Gang Zhang, currently, one of the most famous and most pricey of contemporary Chinese artists. In fact, when Ayu recently checked his blogs, Ma, himself, is pricing his works above our prices (on a price per square meter basis). More importantly, the prices of his works continue to make a steady advance, year after year, and they represent a good investment for the long run. For about a decade, Ma was on permanent commission by a real estate mogul, in Shanghai, where Ma has lived since the mid-1990's, and none of his newer works are coming onto the market. He recently, ended that relationship and is preparing works for a Museum dedicated to his work. In some of his works, he includes a horse. It is not actually that he uses horses because his name is Ma (the Chinese word for horse) but for a much more cerebral reason. He did, however, buy a horse, so he could learn from the horse about painting. |
