Being In Country

China offers many opportunities, but there
are also many pitfalls.
Quality varies from low to the high standards set by the
ISO.
Even recently, some products have been shown to be
unsafe.
If you want low-cost, low-quality, you can find it,
but we can also find low-cost, high-quality Chinese-made products.
To be sure, there are products, available in
China, that are fraudulent copies of originals, like Chanel, Louis Vuitton,
Sony, Microsoft, and Apple.
Moreover, there are companies with intricate, detailed
websites that do not exist, except on the internet.
Of
course, once you find a product that fits your needs, the next question is what
price to pay?
What makes prices of Chinese goods so attractive is the
conversion ratio of the Chinese Yuan to foreign currencies.
In China, the Yuan goes a long way.
A homemade noodle dinner at the local restaurant costs 7
Yuan (¥), less than one U.S. dollar, yet the restaurant owner can afford to pay
his rent, utilities, and staff.
Ayu can buy a pair of nice jeans at a local boutique
for ¥50, but, if I, as a foreigner, go into the same shop with her, the price
will be ¥200.
The shopkeeper believes that I think in terms of
dollars, and that a pair of women’s jeans for under $30 will seem like an
acceptable price to me.
However, even when Ayu goes into a boutique by
herself, the price is not fixed but can be negotiated.
With all of these factors to consider, how will you
properly navigate the treacherous waters of doing business in China?
Even if you come here yourself, will you be able to get the
price and quality that you want, or even more important, the price and quality
that you should get? Living in country, in China, and with years of experience among us, both in China, in business, and in business in China, we can help you run the gauntlet properly.
